| Too Much Pressure (Rhythm Safari, 1991) I can't tell you much about Manazart except that it was a (Los Angeles-based?) quartet led by singer Alexander Bernard that sank into obscurity in the early '90s amidst a glut of pop reggae acts -- including respected bands that had, by that time, gone pop (Steel Pulse, Aswad, Third World, et al.). On the now-vintage Too Much Pressure -- Manazart's only album, from what I can tell -- they display a real talent to craft catchy hooks on tunes like "Hard Yard" and "Rush Hour," which both balance pop and reggae sensibilities nicely in a distinctly Steel Pulse-ish way. "All Over the World" and the more mellow "Yes I Love You," meanwhile, have an '80s Chalice flavor, while "Freedom Cry" gets jiggy with a little light dancehall (via the "Bam Bam" riddim). It's all very poppy, but other than a few tracks -- the sugary "Real Thing" and the trickly ballads "All Night Long" and "Second Hand Freedom," plus portions of the Soul II Soul-ish title cut -- it doesn't get out of hand. For those of you with a tolerance for the lighter side of reggae, this cheap album might be worth the investment. |
