Africa
Shall Stretch for Her Hand (Makasound, 2003) The Mighty Threes are one of those obscure yet talented acts that music fans -- regardless of genre -- salivate over unearthing. Too bad the group doesn't exist anymore, and too bad that they only released two albums (one vocal, one dub) before disbanding. But thanks to Makasound, roots reggae fans everywhere can discover Africa Shall Stretch for Her Hand, which includes both the vocals and dubs, plus the single "One Black People" and its dub. As you'd guess from their name, The Mighty Threes were a harmony trio, consisting of Bernard Brown, Carlton Gregory, and Noel "Bunny" Brown, who also founded The Chosen Few. This is cool, relaxed roots reggae in the traditional '70s mode, and while there's not a whole lot to distinguish this group's sound from other trios of that era (aside from the sleepy, borderline Gregory Isaacs-like lead vocals), the overall quality of the material is beyond reproach. In particular, "Nearer to Africa," "Sata" (not a remake of The Abyssinians' "Satta Massagana"), and the ethereal "Sinking in the Mist" shine, although basically everything on Africa is strong. If you like vintage roots, this is a guaranteed good time. |
