1Up (Warp, 2004)

REVIEW*
Warp Records are generally considered a left field, if high profile, label. Most of their roster can be classified as
electronica, with some exceptions
-- such as rapper Beans and krautpoppers Broadcast. Another rule breaker is Milanese. Milanese feels like the perfect advert for Planet Mu Recordings.
It's a one-man band that produces the sort of music that gets Mary Anne Hobbs proposing live on Radio 1. The music on
1Up is instrumental jungle with the odd sample thrown in, but it's more accessible than jungle because
it's dubtronica on speed with some dark effects thrown in. This is a soundtrack constructed by a 21st century
King Tubby who loves dub, electronica as well as Faust.
1Up is a six-track EP that is guaranteed to extract the sleep from your eyes on a Sunday morning. Imagine if grime and dubstep really were scary and leftfield. A must for those dub fans out there who enjoy
Dalek, Autechre, Squarepusher, and the abstract beats of Tigerbeat 6 and Planet
Mu.
