| Modern Wild Dub: Dread Meets Disco Punkrocker Downtown (Echo
Beach, 2004) *GUEST REVIEW* Modern reggae is all bashment, dancehall, raggacore, sweet nu roots and dubtronica. Well, if you believe the sales pitch of this compilation, then post punk funk dub should be included to the list of reggae-infected genres. Modern Wild Dub collects a bunch of tracks from Chicks on Speed, !!!, and Radio 4 I’ve been too lazy to check out, and acts such as Chicken Lips, Colder, Playground, and Outhud I’ve never heard of. Twitch from Glasgow’s Optimo club also gets a look in, as does a classic from The Ruts, albeit in a remixed form. Essentially, this is disco for punks and an update on the Soul Jazz compilation New York Noise. Funky at times, but sometimes a little more spooky and you’re not more than a few minutes from a PiL bass line. A little too disco for the reggae mafia, but a nice introduction to some 21st century post punk bands. With some hard-to-find remixes and sleeve notes from Mark Stewart, this goes some way to enhancing Echo Beach’s reputation. But buy New York Noise first to investigate mutant disco in its original form. - ragudave |
