The Stuff+ (Fiend, 2001?) I'd venture to say that this is, and will perpetually be, one of the strangest albums reviewed on this site. As if you couldn't tell from the album cover, song titles, and the name of the group, Mrs. Cakehead is a bit avant garde. Mrs. Cakehead is actually as mister, an underground British artist who blends elements of dub, dancehall, electronica, funk, and Lee Perry-esque insanity into a fun, off-kilter, yet muddled style. Their sound is raw, due at least partly to the fact that, I think he has yet to find his true (i.e., best) sound. Musically, Mrs. Cakehead resembles what I've heard from Playgroup, Voice of Authority, and other On-U Sound dub experimentalists who blend dub with rock, funk, New Age, techno, house, etc. But Mrs. Cakehead throws in vocals to boot -- at times rambling, nonsensical mumbling (a la Scratch Perry) and at times a more focused DJ-style chatting. If I were him, however, I would focus more on the music and skip the vocals altogether. This is because the vocals sound more like Liam Gallagher than Lee Perry or any dancehall DJ I know. Maybe I'm biased, but a thick British accent is obtrusive in the dancehall chatting stylee (even non-Jamaicans generally feign a Jamaican patois to some extent), and when combined with a less than fluid vocal flow, the vocals just prove too distracting. I think Mrs. Cakehead could put together a nice dub album if he wanted to do so. Or, if he needs vocals, perhaps a guest DJ could help. As it is, The Stuff+ is an intriguing but often rocky journey+. |
