Unspecified (False Tunes, 2003)

*GUEST REVIEW*
If you combine roots, pop reggae, and dubtronica what would you end up with?  That recipe may just end up with Unspecified by Paul St Hilaire. This is not a bad album ,but its a bit weak willed and chilled for my liking. Paul's vocals were better suited to the work he did with Rhythm & Sound.  So far, I've been able to avoid contact with the Trojan box set named Chilled Out Reggae, but some of the material on this album may find a home on a future box set.  A Luther Vandross-meets-Barry White effort is even tried on one track.  However, the vocals are just too weak to pull it off.  This is a great album if you like smooth background reggae that also hints at roots and electronica in small doses.  Otherwise, it's a bit of struggle to listen all the way through.  The album is saved slightly by the last three tracks, which feature a harder-edged production.
