Positive Vibrations (Charly, 1998) Along with The Heat Is On and The Lion Roars, Positive Vibrations forms a triumvirate of albums from Charly Records that is neither great nor useless. This set is better than the pedestrian The Lion Roars but not quite as strong as The Heat Is On. All three, however, share a mix of roots, rock steady, and early dancehall from the late '60s to early '80s. Easily the best track here is Gregory Isaacs' classic "My Number One," while a bevy of lesser-known songs provide ample support: Winston Jarrett's "In a de Runnings," Delroy Wilson's lovers tune "Change," Freddy McKay's catchy "Sweet and Sour You," the rock steady of The Ethiopians' "Engine 54," Jah Stone's DJ version of "Black Cinderella" in "Ten Ton Woman," Earl George's rich "Give Thanks and Praise," and the soulful "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" by Barbara Jones & Trinity. |
