| The Pressure Is On (Tsuni, 2005) *GUEST REVIEW* The Pressure Is On, the new album from Pressure, is a triumph. Tsuni Records has released a genuine classic in the modern roots/dancehall tradition. Although the packaging is rather minimalist (though not as scanty as some Shanachie releases), the music is full, rich and heavy, with a refreshing emphasis on real instruments over digital dance beats. Pressure sounds like a smoother, sweeter Capleton, with some St. Thomas flavor thrown in the mix. His lyrics pack a punch, his delivery flows fervently, and the songs drive home conscious themes with an airy effortlessness. The opening title track is a blazing hot single that sounds cutting-edge and old-school all at once, the closing track is an uplifting anthem, and in between are 11 songs of consistently high quality, one featuring a Glen Washington guest appearance. Aside from "The Pressure Is On," my favorites are "Zion Is Home," a gorgeous paean to paradise, and the raw but funky "Buss Dem Brain." The Pressure is On is definitely one of the most exciting releases of 2005, and anyone looking for the latest and greatest reggae should check it out at www.mtneborecords.com. - Reggie |
