Psalms for I (Pressure Sounds, 2002 [orig. released 1975])

*GUEST REVIEW*
In a recent interview with Andy Kershaw, Adrian Sherwood claims that Prince Far I (PFI) loved to do Elvis impressions.  To those who have not heard PFI, his voice is a strange combination of gruffness and authority that recalls Michael Marra, Tom Waits, Mark E Smith and Captain Beefheart. In short, he is a very distinctive Jamaican toaster.  Sadly, the Elvis impressions are missing from this album.  Instead, PFI is in full-on church mode.  More specifically, he voices a number of Psalms and the Lord’s Prayer with an intensity and conviction not often found on DJ albums.  This album is slow and haunting.  If you associate religion with Cliff Richard, gospel choirs, or evangelical sermons, this will be a pleasant surprise.  This album will not be for all tastes, but deserves to be heard.
