| Killing Sound (Rephlex, 2006) *GUEST REVIEW* Reggae is alive and well. Some fans want to keep it frozen in a '70s museum, but to me that's just wrong. Imagine if Adrian Sherwood remixed some bashment tunes, and you start to get a flavour of Killing Sound. It's a collaborative effort between Kevin Bug and John Rootsman. This could be extreme noise dancehall, mutant grime or simply reggaecore. Kevin and John's project may sound like a slasher movie or a Megadeth offshoot, but this is in your face reggae for the 21st century. The riddims are more complex, dirty, and advanced than Pressure. The MCs are in fine fettle and ride the complex beats very professionally. Guest MCs include Warrior Queen, Wayne Lonesome, He-Man, Daddy Freddy, Tony Tuff, and Cutty Ranks. Despite Kevin's grounding in free jazz and noise this album is far from unlistenable. Like an Autechre album, it needs repeated listens and is not recommended for the infirm or migraine sufferers. Presently, Kevin appears to be pretty busy with his Ladybug imprint, the new Bug album, and a club night. Let's hope he and John continue to pervert dancehall in the future. - ragudave |
