Red Light City (John Shop, 2003) One of several early releases (including Lets Ride and Diamond Volume III) from the new kid on the block John Shop Records, Red Light City is a one-rhythm album co-produced by the multi-talented Yami Bolo. Surprisingly, though, the riddim has a distinctly urban hip-hop edge unlike the rootsy dancehall for which he is known. Still, the drowsy, relaxed tempo -- along with an impressive line-up of conscious roots-leaning performers like Buju Banton, Ras Shiloh, Sizzla, Anthony B, and Capleton -- should draw in roots fans who might be put off by overly aggressive dancehall or hip-hop beats. Yami Bolo himself provides perhaps the best track here, "Reasons For," a thoughtful statement against racial discrimination with the impassioned refrain, "What is the reason for you no liking me at all? 'Cause every man is black in his own shadow..." Almost as strong are Anthony B's charismatic performance on "Fire Starter," the catchy "Inner Court" by Determine, and Tony Panic's "Wolf in Sheep Clothes," while "Good Things" by Sizzla and "Right Time Come" by Capleton provide ample support. |
