Reggae Hits Volume 26 (Jet Star, 1999) Almost as impressive as Volume 25, Volume 26 only stumbles in a couple of spots -- most notably, Sandra Melody's discordant take on TLC's "No Scrubs" and the overly sappy "Change the World" by an assortment of popular singers who should know better. Like the last volume, this one has a few songs that should be considered for some of the best of the year, my favorites being Freddie McGregor's invigorating roots comeback "Give Jah Glory," Junior Kelly's "Love So Nice" and "What Would It Take" (both hits for this underexposed veteran), and little-known Don Ricardo's "How Can I," one of the most entrancing, soulful tunes I've heard in a while. Other great tracks include Morgan Heritage's scathing "Buss Up Barriers," catchy lovers rock from Dennis Brown, Peter Hunnigale, and Glen Washington, and Capleton's blazing, classical string-enhanced "Highest Grade," which counters disappointing dancehall cuts from Sizzla and Beenie Man. |
