Reggae Legends 3 (Rohit, 1994) I had thought that this album was part of the same series as the other Reggae Legend album I have, but I don't think it is, since that one is on VP Records, and this one is technically called Reggae Legends with an "s." Also, the songs on this volume are distinctly older than the other one; indeed, this one has a largely rock steady feel. The best tracks, though, are the slower, more modern reggae tunes, such as Ken Boothe's "Not for Sale," the classic rocking "You Are My Angel" by Horace Andy, the Jackie Edwards/Hortense Ellis remake of the Lionel Richie/Diana Ross ballad "Endless Love," and the excellent sax-driven instrumental "Take Five" (AKA "The Russians Are Coming"), a remake of the Dave Brubek jazz cut of the same name. However, these are the only good songs here. A mix of reggae and rock steady produced by Bunny Lee, Reggae Legends 3 is a lot more bland than it should be; it certainly is not legendary. Note: there are two tracks added onto the end of the album that aren't listed on the album cover: another saxy rock steady instrumental that isn't in the league of "Take Five" and a generic early reggae love song whose lackluster sound is typical of the album. |
