Echo Beach: Overdubbed by Reverend Echo (Echo Beach, 2005)

*GUEST REVIEW*
The internet and other advances in technology means that anyone can write a music blog, run a bedroom based web radio station, or record a mix tape that can be downloaded on the web.  Mix CDs can be a great introduction to a label.  Witness Trojan's Blunted in the Bomb Shelter, Amunition from Planet Mu and the recent anticon label sampler.  They are generally cheap and decent quality.  However, Overdubbed by Rev Echo is not up to the usual standard of the genre.  It takes 12 tracks from the Echo Beach vaults and attempts to produce a mix CD.  Dub Syndicate, Transglobal Underground, Asian Dub Foundation, The Rootsman, and Suns of Arqa all get included.  The Echo versions of the tracks just don't work that well together.  They cover ambient, house, global roots, and drum 'n bass.  Only the global roots and drum 'n bass and quirky versions are worth hearing.  The TGU and Suns tracks borrow heavily from the African Head Charge school of dub.  The links are pretty terrible and are more Jive Bunny than Mikey Dread.  The mix has a very '80s feel to it, which is at odds with the artists included.  Have a gander around the web for some interesting dub-related mixes that can be downloaded for free.
