Reggae's Greatest Hits Volume 10 (Heartbeat, 1995)
Along with Volume 4, this is one of the best of the Reggae's Greatest Hits
series that I've heard. You certainly get more bang for your buck here, with 17
tracks (two of which are actually two songs in one), featuring big names like Dennis
Brown, Black Uhuru, Peter
Tosh, the Mighty Diamonds, Prince Far
I, Culture, and Junior
Byles. Super-producers Errol Thompson and Joe
Gibbs, who were behind all of the
tunes on this album, could, of course, attract such big names with their talent behind the
scenes, but lesser-known artists -- Leo Graham's fun love song "A Win Them,"
along with the classic, swimming "Rockers" by Glen Washington (who made a
comeback some 20 years after the fact), and a couple of old-fashioned, rural, folksy tunes
from Dennis Walks and The Ethiopian -- outshine most of the superstars (Although they are
all popular, I have never fallen in love with "Maga Dog," "Money in My
Pocket," or "Heavy Manners."), save perhaps for the Mighty Diamonds' dreamy
"Ghetto Living." Almost everything is solid here, though, as the rootsy
Volume 10 presents an appropriately strong end to the series.
