| Reggae Injection (TKO, 2000) *GUEST REVIEW* I admit to buying this CD under a false premise. I thought it was a band featured on a Mr. Scruff reggae compilation who are called the Music Doctors. The Rhythm Doctors turn out to be an American reggae band, albeit from more recent times. They are a six piece from California who are definitely not Moon Ska clones. They play classic instrumental funky reggae, with an organ high in the mix. Reggae Injection is not challenging listening but still contains enough spunk and fun to rise above muzak. But you do sometimes get the feeling they are really playing Shadows tunes on a borrowed ballroom organ. If TV show Heartbeat had a sister JA programme, they would use some of this sort of stuff as incidental music. The Butch Cassidy Sound System tread a similar line to this group but manage to be a class above using imagination alone. - ragudave |
