With the Artists (Burial Mix, 2003)

*GUEST REVIEW*
This is an album from the Basic Channel label, who are also the people who reissue the Wackies back catalogue. With the artists brings together eight singles from the Rhythm & Sound stable. The music is hard to describe but will be familiar to fans of Pole, the Scape label, and the Sonar festival. It is minimal techno dub meets soul music. On its own, the beat is lovely and would be the perfect accompaniment for a chill-out session after a dancehall frenzy. The added value in this album is rootsy vocal performances from The Chosen Brothers through Shalom, Cornell Campbell, and Jah Batta. It’s easy to describe a lot of electronica as soulless, but this album manages to make nu dub soulful whilst retaining the dance floor loops. This is a near perfect design of two cultures combining rather than clashing. Let's raise a glass to Kraftwerk for directing
Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald to produce their own brand of Rhythm and Sound.

See Mi Yah (Basic Channel, 2005)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Mark Ernestus and Moritz van Oswald are up to their old tricks. The team behind the Wackies reissues, M Series, Basic Replay, and Basic Channel are behind another interesting project. The See Mi Ya project is a variation on their With the Artists release. The boys have engineered a new rhythm and voiced it using even vocalists. So essentially a one rhythm album. However, it's more E2 E4 rather than a standard Greensleeves riddim album. Its soulful without being twee, and rootsy while still maintaining their dubtronic roots. Contributing vocalists include Sugar Mignott, Willi Williams, Paul St Hilaire, Jah Cotton, and Bobbo Shanti. No female vocals come to the fore, but the vocals work very well and Rod of Iron and Paul St Hilaire provide some highlights. This is a great example of brand new reggae sounding great and being packaged to a high standard. A nice taster for those awaiting the Fisherman rhythm album from Blood & Fire. Those playing this album on CD are strongly advised to keep their fingers off the random play and skip functions and to give full repeated listens.
