| Roots of Dub Funk 5 : Power of the Dub (Tanty, 2006) *GUEST REVIEW* I got wise to the delights of this series with the fourth installment, 2004's Rise of the Eclectic Dread. "Dub Funk" is not a genre unto itself but rather a term clarifying that what we have here is not always straight up dub in the strictly Jamaican sense. Dub being the worldwide phenomenon that it is, dubmasters from various places (including the US, UK, Brazil, France, Sweden, Canada, Australia, and the Netherlands -- all represented here) are continually seeking to combine the mind-and-body-twisting essence of dub with their own sonic concocting. The 14 tracks here mix synthesized and live sounds, sometimes using a purely roots starting point (as in the case of US band Groundation) though often going well beyond the unyielding drums and bass core of traditional dub. Such roots reminders as Nyabinghi drumming are a frequent occurrence while an almost anything-goes spirit brings certain tracks to a nearly perfect combination of foundational dub and experimentation. It's perhaps best not to single out any selections here, since dub fans vary widely as to what grabs 'em and what doesn't. Let's just say that while the majority of this disc is sheer dub brilliance, some moments may come across as cold, gimmicky and uninspired. But seek it out, and buy it if you're a dub lover. You may well find it killer all the way through. - Tom Orr |
