| The Roots of Dubstep (Tempa, 2006) *GUEST REVIEW* Heard about dubstep but don't know much about it? Well, the packaging on this compilation attempts a historical analysis of this scene. Inspired by garage, dub, dancehall, jungle, and electronica, amongst others, Roots selects tracks from 2000-2004 and presents them in an unmixed format. The packaging is well-designed and rather informative. The music is less introspective and paranoid than Kode 9 and Burial's. More garage than ghost-town if you will. But the bass is still in the foreground perverting all and sundry. The high proportion of instrumental tracks may dissuade some, but the broken beats can tell a story without MC egos. - ragudave |
