Rootz Underground Movement

Movement (Mystic Urchin, 2008)

Movement is a resounding opening salvo from Rootz Underground, a six-piece band from Jamaica who have been playing together since 2000. That experience shows in a tight, honed sound, both musically and vocally. Also evident is the fact that they performed live exclusively for five years before attempting any recordings. As such, Movement is brimming with live energy reminiscent of some of Steel Pulse's best work, from the dancehall-flavored "Time Is an Illusion" to the sing-along roots harmony of "20 Centuries" to the rock 'n roll edge and chanting refrain of "In the Jungle." Only in the latter half of the album does the tempo slow, as lovers tunes and ballads take center stage. It's in these slower songs -- particularly "Rain" and "When I Go" -- that Rootz Underground seems less comfortable, although love songs "Riverston" and "In My Hut" are solid. Still, there's an accessibility to the music -- with catchy hooks and guitar licks -- that make Rootz Underground seemingly poised for crossover success, although they never feel like a purely commercial act that neglects their reggae roots. Part of the grounded nature of their sound comes courtesy of lead singer Stephen Newland, who has a voice crafted for reggae, with a Marley-esque rasp and a dancehall edge that veers occasionally into sing-jay territory. The first half of Movement is a stunning achievement, packed with jam after jam that will have you moving every inch of your person. The latter part of the album can't maintain either the energy or the quality, however. If it cut off at "In My Hut," this could be a five-star album, but as it is, we'll have to settle for a "mere" four-star effort. In 10 years, we might be looking back at Movement as the dawn of the career of a major force in reggae.
