Ruff Neck (JamDown, 1999)
What's worse than a crappy one-rhythm album? Two crappy one-rhythm
albums! This double album inflicts twice the pain than should be legally allowed by
any record. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I'm not a one-rhythm fan, but
if you're gonna do an entire album with one beat, at least make sure the beat is
wicked.
Since Ruff Neck is essentially two such albums, it fails doubly so.
The first riddim has a decent hollow, water drop sound, and the second -- which is a bit
better (meaning it gets old by the 7th track, whereas the other riddim gets old by track
5) -- has nice echoing, airy digital tweets and waves, but neither can support the 13
tracks that they attempt. These merely OK beats could sustain a good song, given a
strong performance by the artist, but the performances here are so generic, they could be
have been constructed by Acme. Many of these tunes -- the best being Lady G's
"Niceness," Goofy's "Clinton Defense," and Tanto Metro &
Devonte's
"What the F@#k" -- could be alright in the context of a varied, multi-rhythm
album, but on this uninspired, slack set, they drone on and on (and on).
