Irie Feelings: Chapter & Version Irie Feelings is the type of album I had in mind when I thought of a reggae review website. That way, there would be some warning that would let potential buyers of the album know that it is compromised solely of dubs, versions, and other such re-workings of one song. Twenty-two takes on one song. Granted, "Irie Feelings" is a great song -- one of my favorite "toasting" songs (I'm generally not a big fan of the style.) -- but 21 additional mixes of any song is liable to drive someone mad. After knowing "Irie Feelings" well, it was nice to get to hear the original upon which Edwards did his invigorating scatting, Johnny Clarke's "Everyday Wondering," although it pales in comparison to Edwards' take on it. The nuances between many of these tracks are so subtle, they shouldn't even be separate songs, but "Dub Master" is a nice alternate mix featuring digital blips and whirs. Thankfully, some of the cuts on the album are indeed different songs, using original lyrics sung over the "Everyday Wondering" music. Tyrone Downie's "Dub Master Special," the cultural sound of the Heaven Singers' "Rasta Dreadlocks," and Milton Henry's falsetto-driven "What Can I Do" fall into that category. Still, all of this repetition is likely to make you appreciate less and less the power of "Irie Feelings." |
