One Day Maybe (Sashamon, 2003)

REVIEW*
Sashamon's "One Day Maybe," available at cdbaby.com, is another strong release from Hawaii's flourishing reggae scene. Although only an average vocalist, Sashamon's delivery is soft and sensitive, the perfect compliment to his supple guitar playing. His overall sound reminds me of his fellow Hawaiian Jack Johnson. Like a tree swaying in the Hawaiian breeze, Sashamon's music drifts gently, but its roots run deep. The opening track, "Jah Roots," and the finale, "Rise," are probably the best showcases for his laid-back take on righteous reggae, while the mildly militant "Peaceizafiya" and "Herbal Criminal" give the the album some edge. Other stand-outs include "Necta," a beautiful lovers rock gem, and "Japanese Squeeze," which is every bit as silly as its title would suggest. The remaining tracks, while not classic, give the album its characteristic "Peaceful Vibration." If you like your reggae mild and mellow, "One Day Maybe" may be for you.
