Scape Showcase (Scape, 2003)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Fusion is not generally taken too seriously by the music business.  Scape, a Berlin based label manages to combine minimal techno with dub.  In theory, this fusion shouldn’t work, but this label sampler does.  Techno is normally associated with high BPM and mechanical beats, while dub meanders along at its own pace and has a more organic feel.  Showcase contains 12 tracks of warm, glitchy dub-tronica with just the odd hint at jazz and Tigerbeat 6.  Pole is the most well known artist here and is also the label's head honcho.  Fans of Basic Channel and their many imprints should investigate this largely instrumental album.  On-U Sound appear to have been of the first reggae labels to fuse dub with global roots, hip hop, and electronica 20-plus years ago.  It's good to see that the rest of us are just catching up.  This is not an album for the purist dub or roots fans, but this leaves the rest of us to enjoy it.
