One Moment in Peace (Rootdown, 2008)
German roots singer Sebastian Sturm is one of the hottest reggae artists in Europe, and listenting to his sophomore album One Moment in Peace, it's easy to see -- or should I say "hear" -- why. His vocal style comes from the Marley school of easygoing raspy, and combined with the live-instrument sound, the resulting package comes fells like what would happen if Groundation decided to do an album of love songs. Granted, not every track is a love song -- as titles like "Be Righteous" and "True Music" indicate -- but it's got a lighter tone than, say, Groundation, and it's all very, very laid back, even for reggae. Some might initially find the music a bit too drowsy, but you'll probably find yourself humming the ridiculously catchy tunes hours later. This is the tightest of albums, with nary a wasted track, from the sprightly "Invitation" to the more fiery "Seeing Things" to sultry "Ey Honey." One Moment in Peace isn't hard-hitting, edgy roots reggae; it's just great music. Fans of Bob Marley (and who isn't?) should check it out: www.sebastian-sturm.com.
