For Everyone (Pow Wow, 1989)

The multi-talented Sophia George was one of the groundbreaking female performers on the '80s and '90s dancehall scene, but although she released three albums on the American Pow Wow label, she's never quite gotten the attention that, say, Sister Carol or Patra have. George's varied delivery ranges from singing with a dainty lilt, as on the sweet lovers tune "Honestly I Do," to chatting with a gruff DJ demeanor, as on "Final Decision." For Everyone, her debut album, has a dated '80s synth reggae/early digital dancehall sound, but it's charming in its own kitschy way. Songs like "Love Again," "Love's on the Way," and "Girlie Girlie" are shallow and sentimental, but catchy enough for repeated listens. "Girlie Girlie" seems to be George's most well-known song, as it's included on several compilations, including the 2004 Trojan best-of release of the same name, which contains all but one of the tracks on For Everyone, so if you go by that standard, this is a very representative sampling of her material.
