Strictly Ragga (1993, Vital Sounds) Reggae Books Reggae Posters Reggae Concert Reggae Album An excellent dancehall compilation from England's Vital Sounds label, this album has not one week track (Well, Chaka Demus & Pliers' "Mr. Mention" isn't so hot.). Strictly Ragga is every bit as good as the more well-known (at least, in the States) Strictly the Best and Reggae Gold releases, with cuts like Terror Fabulous' smash hit "Action," Heavy D and Buju Banton's wonderful "Hotness" (featured on the soundtrack for the otherwise worthless Ed Lover and Dr. Dre flick Who's the Man?), Cutty Ranks' potent "Armed and Dangerous," and two tunes that utilize the sample of "The Peter Gunn Theme" that propelled Shaggy's "Oh Carolina" to success, Echo Minott's "Murder Weapon" and "What's the Name of the Sound" by Nereous Joseph and Tenafly. A nice thing about this album is that it includes some solid tracks not readily available on other collections (again, at least not in the U.S.), such as General Levy's "Champagne Body" and Chevelle Franklyn's irresistibly dance-able "Nice and Naughty." Strictly Ragga is a great investment that will pay dividends in your booty (I don't know what that means.). |
