| Studio One Soul (Soul Jazz, 2001) *GUEST REVIEW* This is wonky reggae from Soul Jazz records, in the same vein as Blood & Fire's Soul from Jamtown. Soul Jazz started off as a record shop and eventually expanded to become a club night and record label. The label has released gospel, jazz, electronica, funk, soul, electronica and reggae. Their reggae series includes the eclectic Dynamite compilations and their Studio One series. Studio One Soul is essentially reggae versions of soul classics. It's wonky because it doesn't sound quite right, even though it's performed well and with sincerity. A lot of decent soul music now gets taken for granted. Basically Tarantino soundtracks, adverts, commercial radio stations, and beer factories overexpose us to some amazing tunes and powerful lyrics. Listening to these versions lets you hear the tracks with fresh ears. It also gives a timely reminder that reggae is always evolving and borrowing rhythms. No one would seriously argue that these versions stand up to the originals, but this album is well worth a listen. - ragudave |
