| Studio One DJ's (Soul Jazz, 2002) *GUEST REVIEW* Soul Jazz continue their exploration of the Studio One vaults with another themed compilation. This time the theme is the DJs, toasters and chanters. They took a bit of a gamble with this release as quite a few big name DJs such as U Roy, I Roy, Big Youth, and Dr Alimintado are absent. However, most folks should recognise artists such as Prince Jazzbo, Prince Far I, and Dillinger. The rest of the artists are relatively obscure. The underlying Studio One riddims are pretty well exposed and include "Rockfort Rock," "Satta Massa Gana," "MPLA," and "Women in the Ghetto." However, despite the clear aim of this compilation the riddims are the real highlight of this slightly disappointing release. The highlights are a Big Joe toasts of an Abyssians track, a Prince Far I track and one from Prince Francis. Perhaps Studio One obsessives will love these relatively obscure set of tracks but Mr Dodd's strengths lay elsewhere. - ragudave |
