Parables (VP, 2006)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Like his father, Jimmy Riley, Tarrus brings an unwavering pop sensibility to his roots reggae vocals. But whereas Jimmy's songs were largely unremarkable, Parables is just bursting with boom tunes. The album opens with "System Set," a catchy and clever condemnation of Western racism. The next song is "Haunt You," a strident, guitar-driven warning to the wicked. This theme reappears in "Beware," a mind-blowing anti-gun anthem that strikes the perfect balance between hot riddims and cool vocals. Riley continues railing against the instruments of death in "Micro Chip," a humorous -- but compelling -- critique of computerization. "Beware" and "Micro Chip" must rank among the best back-to-back tracks on any modern reggae album. Astonishingly, Riley follows them two more peak performances in "One Two Order" and the John Legend cover "Stay With Me," both brilliant showcases for his seductive singing. And Riley strikes gold yet again with irresistibly powerful and playful "Lion Paw." The consistent quality of the singing and songwriting on Parables makes it a must-own modern classic.
