| Mr. Rankin (Respect, 2006)
Just when you thought there were no Rankses left now that Shabba and Cutty (not to mention Mackie, Nardo, and probably a dozen others) have faded into the background of the dancehall scene, here comes Tiger Ranks with claws bared. Originally hailing from Jamaica but now based in Philadelphia, the burly-voiced Ranks' music combines the street sounds of both JA and the US with impressive cohesion. The music ranges from the straightforward dancehall of "Dolla Dolla" to the slinky Southern rap of "Drop" to the reggaeton of "Everybody" to the hardcore East Coast hip-hop of "Reality" to the hip-hop/dancehall fusion "Hit the Floor" to the R&B/dancehall hybrid take on Sade's "Sweetest Taboo," "Can You Feel Us." Mr. Rankin is basically a party album (with a couple of rude boy sidebars in "Reality" and "Blastman"), and even if you aren't normally drawn to such a mix of styles, it's hard to resist dancefloor fillers like "Hit the Floor," "VIP Style," "Everybody," and "Dolla Dolla." Lyrically, the album hits all the dancehall standards -- sex, violence, and braggadocio -- and as evidenced by the chorus to "Drop," it's safe to say that Tiger Ranks won't be writing for Hallmark anytime soon: "It's time to rock, time to pop, it's time to get down, shake and drop. Girl, do your thing, your nasty thing, let me see you open up and let me in." Laden with hooks and beats to spare, though, Mr. Rankin is a fun introduction to one Ranks I'm sure we'll hear more from in the future. Note: This review is based on an unfinished album; the final version may have more/different tracks, but you can check several out at myspace.com/tigerranks. |
