Trojan Nyahbinghi Box Set (Trojan, 2003)
*GUEST
REVIEW*
Misread the sleevenotes for this box set and you may expect Lomax style field recordings of Rasta camps. This triple disc actually contains studio recordings of camp musicians and tracks which borrow heavily from the camps. The sound involves three different type of drums along with whatever else comes to hand to create a raw, rootsy, and
un-commercial form of reggae. This is one of the few Trojan compilations that actually takes a risk. It takes a reggae sub-genre
that's relatively unknown and educates Joe Public. This is not as consistent as the
Trojan Roots set, but is one of the most interesting released in recent years. As expected the production is low key and the sentiments expressed are Rasta
focused, but the set has some nice little gems. This collection is for those out there who seek out all grades of reggae, including the unpolished.
