Twiggi (Penthouse, 1996)
Featuring great low, sultry vocals and some quality songwriting, Twiggi's debut album serves notice that she will (or at least, she should) be a lasting element in the dancehall music scene. Sixteen tracks thick, Twiggi centers around 3 superior tunes: "I Want Your Love" (the DJ version of which, here titled "Want It," features Buju Banton and was included on Strictly the Best 13), "It's Too Late," and "Where Did the Love Go." Each of these is a superbly crafted dancehall ditty with a catchy melody and crisp musical production. Also nice are the sexy "Temptation," "Nothing Between Us," and her cover of Mariah Carey's "Can't Let Go." Except for the Carey remake, the best cuts on the album are self-penned, showing that Twiggi has skills beyond her irresistible vocals. Ultimately, though, the remaining cuts -- some written by her and some by others (mostly remakes) -- fall short, somewhat tarnishing an otherwise strong album.
