Train to Zion (Blood & Fire, 1997)

*GUEST REVIEW*
Train to Zion is another Steve Barrow compilation  from  the Manchester, England-based Blood & Fire label.  The subject of this compilation is Huford Brown's alias, U Brown.  He is a JA-based DJ/toaster whose first records were released in 1975.  U Brown owes U Roy a great debt, both from being an unofficial student of the master's techniques and vocal style.  Bunny  Lee did the majority of the production on this album, and the tracks were voiced and mixed at King Tubby's studio between 1975 and 1978.  This album has a nice echo-filled, rootsy feel and would be a welcome addition to any toasting or roots collection.  Standout tracks are "News to the Nation" and "Train to Zion," which has a very anthemic feel to it and includes Linval Thompson nattering about a Black Star Liner.  The album is worth a purchase for this track alone.
